For John Olson growing up with
biologist parents was always an adventure. While his friends
went to Disney World on their vacations, he and his family
traveled out into the desert so that his father could study
desert bacteriology. While his friends learned about early
birds getting the worm, he learned the migratory patterns of
the Zonotrichia albicollis.
He went on to earn a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the
University of Wisconsin at Madison. After two years of
postdoctoral work in computational drug design at the
University of California at San Francisco, John now works
for a computational biochemistry company in the San
Francisco Bay Area.

Oxygen
Christy Award Winner 2002
The year is 2014 and Valkerie Jansen is presented with the
opportunity to continue her microbial ecology research as a
member of the NASA corps of astronauts. When a sudden
resignation opens the door for her to be a part of the Ares
10 “Mars” crew, she is catapulted into the adventure of her
life. Training. Mystery. Romance. Everything’s moving at
warp speed until the Ares 10 passes the point of no return.
Only then does she discover evidence that the spaceship was
sabotaged — possibly by a member of the crew. Is it just a
tragic accident or a suicide mission?

The Fifth Man
The sequel to the award-winning Oxygen. Courage
and self-sacrifice have finally brought the crew of Ares 10
safely to the planet Mars. They enthusiastically begin the
mission they were sent to perform. Though working under
dangerous conditions and experiencing strained
relationships, the astronauts are encouraged by fascinating
discoveries that seem to point to the presence of
microscopic life on the planet. But their work is disrupted
when frightening sabotage, like that of the trip to Mars,
begins again. Is the "fifth man" alien or human?
